Our story

Built between 1868 and 1869 by brewers Nalder and Collyer, and originally known as The Sun Hotel, believed to be named for the rooms upstairs catching sunlight from dawn till dusk. This beautiful little independent pub has been serving the local community for more than 150 years.

As the town of Carshalton grew and the sun changed hands several times over the next century, finally coming under the ownership of Punch Taverns in 1997, by 2008 they closed, with the future of the tavern in doubt.

Fortunately later that same year, the site was taken over by owners Jo and Cal, who extensively renovated, restoring the pub to its former glory. It boasts an incredible copper bar, beautiful Victorian features, resulting in a comforting and cosy atmosphere, thats also a little bit cool if we say so ourselves.

Over recent years The Sun has built a reputation for it’s fresh, seasonal food, with the kitchen currently under the helm of chef Craig XXXX. He trained in xyz, and has worked at xyz.

His philosophy in this kitchen is to provide the very best – and as local as possible- ingredients each season has to offer, presented in honest, accessible and welcoming plates of proper food.

The Sun boasts a beautiful walled garden, perfect for a cold drink in the summer. We also host live music, and other community events. We also have our beautiful function room upstairs

Jo, Cal and Indigo warmly welcome you to The Sun.

Let the sun shine on!
